Contact your local assistance office to find out the specifics. I would start with first filing for child support. If you do not have a career and children are involved they can help you get child care (free or low cost) and free job training. It's really hard to get on your feet, but worth it if it's a bad situation. Good Luck!

More information is needed to answer this question. What country are you in, do you have children, was he abusive?? Do you work or have an income?? A womens shelter will be able to help in most cases. Try that or call the nearest social services office. More assistance is usually given if children are involved. In Ontario, Canada housing and assistance is available and usually a priority if you are in a shelter. Hope this is helpful.

If you have children, you can indeed get AFDC, food stamps, & housing assistance.

Now, if your husband is abusing you; you can seek shelter at a domestic violence shelter, which also will help you find employment.

If not, you need to seek employment BEFORE you leave your husband.

I am in NO WAY saying that you should stay in an abusive situation!!! In fact, if you are in an abusive relationship: GET OUT NOW!!!!!! If not, seek employment first.

Most states require you to get a job in order to "get assistance" It is no longer a hand out to whomever comes asking for it. You have to file for child support from your husband for the children, if he doesn't pay and the children have to go on welfare the GOVERNMENT will go after him for repayment. If YOU go on welfare you will be expected to get a job and pay back what you get or the county you recieve welfare from will find you a job.
