Like when a fight between two men is escalating, before any punches are thrown, they put their faces really close together while yelling. Why do they do this?

Intrusion of personal space and intimidation. Usually the less dominant male will back down after the yelling if yelling doesnt work, punches do the talking.

Ever seen dogs trying to "dominate/scare" the other??
No different.
Even if you're the stronger man, if you throw the first punch, you may come across as too rushy, which can be taken as panic, so the other will probably bring you down. The strength will be on his side anyway...
The only way to win a fight is scare, impress the other. Its just a matter of beleif and fear, because the punches, in themselves, don't hurt..

1. Bad breath cause the opponent to back away

2. Demonstrate to the other guy that you are willing to "LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!"

3. It's a psychological thing. Looking him in the eyes and coming closer and getting in the other guys face make you more aggressive and to him you look bigger and more menacing (Note: does not work if you are a very short guy, then you can't look him in the eyes, and it's just plain awkward.)

4.Getting closer for a "SUCKER PUNCH", without making it obvious. Beside the opponent is preoccupied with focusing on your face. BLAM!

It's part of their intimidation factor. They figure the other person will back off.
