The 1970's were a time of political apathy. What caused this political apathy and malaise? Why had the American voters lost confidence in their leaders and government?

The dishonesty of Watergate and the military disaster of Vietnam and the increasing awareness of a disease that inflicted the voters due to a cancer of mistrust and lack of ethics concerning campaigning ,and political red tape began to multiply at an extremely high rate that little was being done for the common man.
