Hi,

I have a Nvidia Geforce 7300 LE and want to upgrade to the Geforce 8600 GTS.......i know i can because i have the PCIx16 slot, but wherever i look to buy one it always has a name in front of it before it says Nvidia....like it will say XFX Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS or PNY VERTO Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS.......what does this mean? i think that it means that it is overclocked? The only problem is i have a Dell and i know that they dont let you overclock the CPU, but im not sure about overclocking of the video card? Also if i cant get an overlclocked one, could you tell me where i can buy a regular one?

Thanks a lot

Okay let me some if I can clean up some of the stuff people have said. The name in front are the companies that manufacturer the cards, nVidia just makes the chipset, they do not actually make cards themselves. Some cards are overclocked, some are stock speeds. The Dell computer has no control over whether you have an overclocked video card. Additionally, if the video card is sold overclocked, then quite obviously running it at the overclocked speed will not void your warranty for the card, and it will have nothing to do wtih the warranty on the Dell computer. The card only needs a 350W power supply, not 500W. That should cover everything I think, but if you need further help, feel free to email me.

Nvidia is an American company, which is one of the world leaders in GPU technologies and integrated circuits. XFX is one of the many companies that manufacture graphics cards based on the chipset and circuits designed by Nvidia, just like you see a lot of intel circuits in many brands of computers. Overclocking was a happening thing when hardware was quite expensive. These days it does not make a lot of sense because RAM and such are pretty affordable, atleast not worth the risk of cooking your processor. i would suggest you let it be. The same applies for the graphics card too. :)

The name in front is the company that manufactures the card they all use the same chip-set but some are more reliable then others. I have never had good luck with xfx they may be cheaper but I don't see the same performance as a pny or evga brand card. Also in order to run a 8600gts you have to make sure you have at least a 500 watt power supply The bigger the card the more power they need so keep that in mind most manufacturers will recommend the size power supply needed to run their card.

the difference between the two graphics cards is the brand...and your warranties will be canceled if u overclock anything on the default components of the computer...
