I've known people who have gotten it in a year where others have waited for years.

That's not unusual. I know of clients who have waited 5 and 6 years. The only true answer that I can give you is that you must wait as long as it takes. Also, expect to have to appeal your case at least one time. Almost no person is granted SSD on their first claim.
