They live a very long time.
They can be selectively bred to many rare and beautiful colors and patterns.
They have existed as a selective breed for centurys.
The really great ones sell for upwards of $50,000.00 in Japan.

Koi are one of the oldest breeds of fish first kept in captivity. First for food, then as actual pets. Koi are very social fish and interact well with humans. They can even recognize their owners. Koi have breeds have been around for centuries and it is actually an art form to breed them. Breeding Koi for color, from blue to gold to black and everywhere inbetween. Koi are a large long lived fish (in excess of 70 years) They are graceful to watch in ponds and each has their own coloring patterns and personallities. they are highly disease resistant and hearty. With proper lineage can also be a great source of income for a hobbiest for breeding and show.
I guess you have to have them to know why.

koi's are very popular to have in ponds such as in japan. As there are beliefs in arowanas of bringing good luck, kois have also been believed to have symbolic importance as well. Also, kois can stand cold weather and can grow big and much more colorful than your average comet goldfish.

They are very tranquil to look at.Their colors are really beautiful.They have long life's if cared for correctly.They are valuable.And there is an old saying that if you see two of them kiss....make a wish and it will come true.

well they can survIve cold temps in ponds ive seen one on TV having surgery and he cost 500,000 dollars very rare colors are out there they are so nice and peace full don't get them unless you got a nice fish tank or pond i have a albino koi thanks for the question
