Once both sides had nukes, a real war was not possible. We has an advantage in nukes during most of the Cold War, but nobody wanted to kill that many people regardless of the outcome. Also, we didn't like the way the Soviets were taking over Eastern Europe, but we couldn't just go in and fight (you think people are tire of the Iraq War, imagine the fatigue of the nation after a real war that actually affected everyone). So we just let it smolder until Reagan up the ante.

It was the result of a power struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union following WWII. With the destruction of most of Europe, these two countries became the only superpowers capable of having significant influence over other countries. A four-decade power grab resulted that produced what we commonly call the "Cold War."

CNN put together some great info about it.

The military industrial complex (Eisenhower farewell speech) must keep an enemy in the eye of the American people...must keep the American people afraid...so that they can continue to steal our tax dollars by propagating insane military spending...

The Cold War never happened. It was a made up product designed to keep the military industrial complex awash in our tax dollars

It's tough to break through the established lies...but the Soviet Union never had a tenth of the weapons we were told they did

And the military industrial complex has been scrambling to find a new boogeyman to keep their corporate welfare pyramid scheme going to replace the loss of the imagined Cold War.

It's not a coincidence Bush is serving 2 terms without ever winning a presidential election

Bush is the new wet dream of the military industrial complex

If this is new to you I'd suggest Professor Howard Zinn's "A Peoples History of the United States"

There's the truth....and there's the lies the government sells as the truth.
