One would, and should, do a school project on Harriet "Moses" Tubman (c. 1821 - 1913) - because she rocked!! She became the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. She was born a slave, named Araminta, and worked on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. She adopted the name Harriet, and fled northwards after she was forced to marry a fellow slave, John Tubman at the age of 22.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, she went to serve the black community in the Carolina Sea Islands, helping to finance a school and working as a nurse. She also worked in a number of military operations, as a spy, scout, and a leader of a raiding party. After the war, she continued to work for the rights of black Americans, and founded a home for the needy and/or homeless.
I would write a school project on Harriet Tubman out of pure admiration and respect for what she accomplished, and how many other people she helped in her lifetime.

Harriet Tubman was a strong woman and helped slavery. I think she is a good choice.

She was an extraordinary woman, and I'd be proud to have one tenth her courage and determination. As a young child born into slavery, she was beaten to break her spirit. Obviously, it didn't work.
