I never really understood this. When you are driving without your liscense (you left it at home/lost it ect.) the fine is 180$. The fine for speeding is 85$. When you speed, you put other people's lives in danger (and yours). When you drive safely without your driver's liscense, even though the cops can check the liscense in the cop car computer, you are fined more than double of what speeding is.

There are several reasons for this, and some of them are rather morbid. NJ has had a terrible time identifying people killed in car accidents. If the dead has ID, it's much easier and unbelieveably cheaper! There are several other reasons that are pretty much along the same line; keeping ID on you.

I'm not sure, is it double if you are driving without being licensed? Or merely driving without physically being in possession of your driver's license?

If you don't have a license period it makes sense. If you forgot your license at home it seems kind of silly. Normally you get a small fine if you forgot your license at home, but I don't think it makes sense to double speeding tickets as a result.

But I would be willing to bet you've read something wrong and it is if you are unlicensed period. And for the record, 85x2 is not 180. There isn't a set fine for speeding regardless of the limit and speed you were going.

In most places it depends on how much you were going over the limit and it varies depending on how much. ie. you pay X amount per mile over the limit when going 10-15 miles over the limit and you pay a larger amount per mile over if you were going 15+ etc.etc. just as an example.

Because arguably you put people's lives in danger when you don't have a license.

Yes some people forget or lose it...but many don't have it for a reason...DUI's....too many accidents or speeding tickets ect....

If a person don't have a license then they don;t have it for a reason...now knowing how much it costs it would be pertinent to remember to bring your license each time you drive.
