and what would happen in the event of a major war and some young but extremely popular/famous movie star was picked... would they have to go fight like the rest of us?

Imagine the press coverage if sometime down the road Matt Damon Jr. was killed in action.

Celebrity or not they would have to answer their call to duty. Unless they like our own president did Defect to dodge the draft!

Find a good medium and ask Elvis - he knows the answer. Jimmy Stewart could tell you too and I think he is still among the living. Some change their names and claim immunity (ask Cassius Clay). But all males born after Jan 1960 (I believe) are required by law to register at their 18th birthday and if called, will serve in some way (Air Guard like President Bush, Naval Reserve like Sen Kerry, or other statistically less dangerous organizations for those with connections).

There is no draft. All males are required to register with selective service at 18 years of age. By and large celebrities are used to do productions, entertainment, promotions during a major war. That is the way it was in ww2, there were a few exceptions because they requested combat duty. It is a citizens duty to serve their country. I am proud that I did my duty.

I would suppose so. A number of celebrities in the past have served. Elvis served in the Army (I believe he was drafted). And Pat Tillman the football player served in Iraq and was killed there (but I think he volunteered for duty after 9/11).

Elvis Presley was drafted and served as did several others.
