I work with ceramic tile and I grabbed a pottery sponge (a clean one) to clean the algae off the glass. It worked beautifully

Never tried it, but it sounds like a good idea. Many sponges available for kitchen use contain mold and mildew inhibitors that keep them from being safe for aquariums, I bet thosse don't. Great idea I think

Algae is actually a good indicator of the health of your tank.
If you have too much algae (to have some is unavoidalbe) then it means there is too much waste, the water quality is not very good (change 50% of the water more regularly) and/or the lighting is too strong or left on for too long.
Yes I have tried your method to clean the glass but ever since I used algae as an indicator, I've managed to achieve a good balance for about 2 years.
There's enough for my otto and algae-eating shrimp to feed on but very little on the glass. I just clean the front side of the tank when it gets green.

Are you sure it was the silicone and not high levels of ammonia or nitrites? Getting the wrong silicone happens and I would stick to either the DAP silicone "for aquariums" or regular silicone made for fish tanks. As you have learned, silicones with fungal agents just don't work. Betta's don't need decorations. They don't swim in them and need the space more than fake decorations. Some floating plants also work.
