Yes they will. They have a very improved Defense and despite their less than spectacular d-line; they're playing a 3-4 defense this year which means that the d-line only has to eat up blockers and stop the run, they don't have to rush the passer. The pass rush will come from the LB's. Brandon Moore, and newly aquired Tully Banta-Cain should help the pass rush, while 1st round pick Patrick Willis will be a dominant run-stopper. Manny Lawson showed some flashes of brilliance in coverage.
The secondary should be dominant with the signings of Nate Clemments, and Micheal Lewis. Plus returning pro-bowler Walt Harris.
The offense won't miss Norv Turner as much as people say. This "mastermind" had the offense ranked only 26th last year. They did improve under him, but the bar was set pretty low. And even with the new OC, it is the same offensive system which will be the first time for Alex Smith having the same system in the NFL for two consecutive years, PLUS Hostler has been his QB coach for the passed few years. Not to mention the new WRs A. Smith has to work with this year: D. Jackson, A. Lelie, and J. Hill from the draft. Plus Smith's favorite WR from last year; the sure-handed Arnaz Battle. Vernon Davis will be much improved this year after missing six games last year due to injury, he's a freak of nature.
Add that to one of the top up and coming head coaches in Mike Nolan, and VP of player personel Scott McCloughan who have made a habbit of dominating the draft.
They have a lot of confidence from last year. Alex Smith is improving, and the D should be much improved.
And most importantly..... FRANK GORE. THe NFC's leading rusher last year is no longer a secret which means that opposing teams will load the box with up to 8 guys which will allow the new WR's and Vernon Davis to have fun out in the open.
THe NFC west is going to be competitive, but Seatle is injury prone, St. Louis is getting old, and Arizona never lives up to expectations.

The 49ers definitely had a great offseason, maybe better then any other team in the league. But I don't think they are ready for the playoffs just yet. They have a very difficult schedule playing the AFC North and NFC South. There are six very good teams in those divisions. I also don't think that Alex Smith is quite ready to win the division yet. He still doesn't make enough great plays. The Seahawks will be healthy with the return of Shaun Alexander and they brought in another great pass rusher in Patrick Kerney. I also think that the 49ers defensive front seven is not good enough to compete just yet. Their linebackers are average and their pass rush is not good enough to help out that good secondary. That is one of the most important aspects of a great defense. Look at the Redskins, they have a good secondary but they don't create any pressure on the QB so their defense is horrible. I can see the same thing happening to the 49ers. They also lost Norv Turner, and that is huge because he is the main reason for Alex Smith's and Frank Gore's great progress last season. Give them 1 or 2 more years and a great pass rusher along with a veteran leader in the linebacker corps and they will once again return to the playoffs. Cowboys are taking the NFC this year. Go Boys!!

Yes. They will go 10-6 and tie with Seattle. They will hold the tie breaker and win the division. Frank Gore will have an even better season than 2006. Davis, Jackson, Leile, and Hill will be a lot of help for Alex Smith, and will allow Gore to run for over 1500 yards. Patrick Willis, Nate Clemens, Michael Lewis, Banta-Cain, and Franklin will help the defense a lot. They will be a top 15 defense, which is an improvement. GO NINERS!!!!!!!!

aside from having a strong draft they acquired some major free agents in Nate Clements and Darrell Jackson. Clements should be a shutdown corner for them and should do well against fitzgerald, branch, and holt, but one player doesnt make the team, and the rams are looking like they will be a major offensive threat with holt, jackson, mcmichael, bruce and drew bennett. I think Darrel Jackson will give Smith a major receiving threat that he has needed for quite sometime. Also it will give gore more running room because they will need account for jackson now. I think they have a legitimate shot at stealing the division but all of the teams (cardinals, seahawks, and rams) have also improved some, I think that it will be very close between the rams and 49ers

Well, this nfc conference could be very close. It think if Seattle is not careful the '9ers have a chance to take it and I think they will. But we will have to wait and see what kind of a season Alex smith has because if he does well then the offense with Darrell Jackson, Vernon Davis and Frank Gore they will shock people. But also people need to keep an eye on the 'Cards too, they could be competitors finally this year.

No, I dont believe so. People will start to key in on Frank Gore, and I dont think Alex Smith is ready to capitalize on that, he still needs more time to become a better quarterback. Given that Vernon Davis is coming into his own and the Darrell Jackson coming in, I still don't think they will make it.

Yes esp. because they are in the NFC. They adressed so many needs this season I don't know how they could not be a playoff team. They will do great. They will win there division and might go to the NFC Championship. If they make they will lose to the EAGLES!!!

right, right.
Get on the bandwagon NOW.
Sir Alex Smith and company could very well TAKE NOT STEAL; TAKE the division this year.
If they get 10 wins, the division is theirs. 9 wins gets them a Wild Card.
I think they'll get 10.
They're starting to remind me of the Phil Simms led Giants.
