It had more to do with the rights of the individual states versus the federal government than it had to do with slavery! Like all wars its causes were ECONOMIC and not social. There were pro-states rights riots in New York and Philadelphia. The only reason Maryland didn't cecede is because Lincoln stationed federal troops in Baltimore! Maryland was a slave state by the way. A lot of free blacks living in the South fought for the Confederacy -look it up if you don't believe me!.

the main causes of the civil war was money and the fact that the south did not like Abe Lincoln. it was also all about politics. sorry to say this but the reason why the slaves were freed were to cripple the southern economy. they were not freed for the right reason on the indecency of slavery.

That the south was constintly refuseing to obey the laws that Congress would put because they declared that it was "hurting" their states.So they declared themselves independant from the Union,they refused to obey the laws,and they povoked the Union by attacking Fort Sumter.
