The Check Engine light is illuminated and searching other answers here indicates it could be an oxygen sensor. I checked the gas cap, and when I removed it, i could hear the vacuum releasing so I guess that's ok. Other answers indicated anything from nothing serious to very serious. They were told to empty the gas and fill it up with brand name gas....Who to believe? thanks for your experienced help.

Take the car to an Advance or Autozone and have them check it on their handheld computer. Or you can buy one that connects to the plug under the steering column area.
Its easy to use. It connects to your cars computer and will give you back a "code". Look it up in the manual and find out what the problem is.....Oh, don't waste your time or money on emptying your gas tank.

There's only one answer. Get it scanned and find out what the problem is. You can buy an OBDII scanner for $70 that will work on all cars since 96 if you want to be able to diagnose the codes yourself.

More than likely it's an O2 sensor... try resetting it by disconnecting the battery for about 5 minutes and see if it comes back on... if so, you can take it to autozone and they'll check it for free to see what the code is !!!
