1 mole of KI has 1 mole of I and 1 mole of K

1 mole of H20 has 2 moles H and 1 mole O because when it dissociates it becomes 2H+ + O-

Think of a large lego being broken into two.

A large lego of KI will break into a smaller lego each of K+ and I-.

So now you have a mole of each, but the particles are smaller.
