Tell him it's OK to spend the night out .................... Sorry, that slipped.
If it's an ongoing problem, then he needs to see his doctor. If not then something has changed. Have you changed the mattresses or did his side of the bed change? Was the furniture in the room changed around? If none of this has happened, Then he needs to really think about what is on his mind that he is refusing to deal with. Something that he is ignoring doesn't bother him while he is active during the day, but soon as his mind is at ease the pressure keeps him awake.
If your hubby is anything like me, he probably wouldn't tell to keep you from worrying. Men have a tendency to put important thing on the back burner hoping they will go away.

I worked the night shift as a nurse for a while, and have a terrible sleep problem. I would take a sleep aid as soon as I got home on the nights that I had to work back to back so that I would get enough sleep to carry me through. On the days that I didn't have to work I would try to maintain a normal sleep pattern. Good luck---it's not easy!

Could be a number of things..
It could be a physical cause.. Have him visit the dr for a complete physical.. Things such as a pinches nerve, restless leg syndrome, and blocked of compromised air way can lead to restless sleepless nights..
He may need to spend a night or two in a sleep center under observation to determine the exact cause and treatment...

Try swaping sides of the bed. Maybe a massage, is he depressed having anxiety? How old is your mattress...try to flip it. If none of those things work he should talk to a professional about maybe a low dose med that can help. Don't jump right to the meds though they can be addictive. There are plenty of OTC that are good, I take a sleep aid once in a while and it is sold at our local w-mart.

Since I don't know why he has trouble sleeping and if it's been this way for a while, I suggest you consult your physician instead of Y!A. There could be an underlying issue that he needs to have looked at.

I hope, I don't scare you away but, there's an old Indian remedy for people that can't fall asleep. Fill up a glass of water and put it next to your bed side and say a prayer. (any Faith of religion) and close your eyes picture the water next to you........good night sweet dreams. (oh, don't drink the water, throw it away)

Good love making always makes my husband sleep well. If that does not try warm milk or take a Benadryl.

Yes, do all the things others have suggested. But, give a background recording of waves hitting a shore a try. Veeeeerrrrry soothing.
