Drowning is death caused by suffocation when a liquid causes interruption of the body's absorption of oxygen from the air leading to asphyxia.
The actual event of drowning causes the body's functions to cease and thus there is no feeling. However, the events leading up to drowning, asphyxia (suffocation), bradycardia (increase in heart rate), peripheral vasoconstriction (restriction of blood flow to the extremities) and the body's reaction to the lack of oxygen can be quite painful until the victim looses conciousness. Reflex reactions aimed at gaining oxygen (breath hold break point) simply result in excess use of the body's already-low oxygen supply and decrease the time to loss of consciousness.

There's more than one way to drown. If you're lucky, when water enters your throat it will cause a laryngospasm, causing it to involuntarily close up. People that go through this still experience the unpleasantness of suffocation until they pass out. The laryngospasm relaxes and water enters the lungs. If you're unlucky you just suck water into your windpipe. If you've ever been drinking something and had it go down the wrong way you know how unpleasant this is as well accept you can't take any more breaths to cough. You just keep sucking in water. It is apparently very painful to have water hit the lungs, especially if it's fresh water or very cold water. Salt water is closer to the same ph as blood so they say it hurts a bit less but I'm sure nobody cares at the time. The good news (if there is good news), once water enters the lungs, if you're still conscious you apparently lose consciousness very quickly. All of this on top of the absolute horror people must experience knowing what's coming. The process can take a couple of minutes.

drowning includes dying (i think). im havent drowned, and if i did, i would be dead so i couldnt answer this. i think it would hurt, but pain only tells you somthing is wrong, and if you die, pain doesnt matter anymore, nothing matters, your dead.
