I have an assignment in Psychology where I have to violate a "social norm" three different times (I'm guessing in three different situations)...Can someone give me some ideas?

I was thinking about being obnoxiously loud in a library, but how could I carry that out in a regular setting (i.e. a regular store)? I mean, people are loud all the time in stores.
Ideas, please???

Thank you!

pray in public, don't acknowledge someone when they greet you, walk around in public barefoot( go to a restaurant, store, mall) get a ghettoblaster and walk around with some old school rap turned way up.

Hm, all of my first thoughts had to do with things like farting/burping in public and making out in a church or something. But, after I thought about it for a while, it might be more interesting not necessarily to do something outrageous but instead to do something simple and see what your feelings are about it. Like, for example, go out to dinner and not tip the server. This would definitely be violating a social norm. Even though people like to not tip in cases that the service was bad, not tipping in cases where the service was good would be different. Depending on what your assignment is, you can then anaylze how you feel about it and/or how the server would feel about that, etc. Just an idea. If I think of more, I'll write again.

How about waiting for someone to get into a bathroom stall next to you then start making all kinds of noises that would suggest you are having some problems. Then reach under the stall and ask for some toliet paper and see if they give it to you. Stand by the bathroom door with a roll of tp or some magazines and ask people if they would like some toliet paper or some reading material. Go to the library when there are empty tables and go sit right next to someone instead of getting your own table. See how long it takes them to gather their study materials and leave. Ask a complete stranger in the cafeteria, "Are you gonna eat that?" Walk an invisible dog in the park

Norms are expectations of behavior. Here's some easy one's.

Walk on the wrong side of a hallway

Interrupt people when you talk with them

Stick your tounge out at people when you walk

Say goodbye when you greet and hello when you leave

Do not talk if someone ask you something

Good to see psychology classes discussing norms....Good luck!

I wouldn't be loud in a library--that's just too rude. I would roll the car window down and say hi to people at red lights (different people so you don't freak out anybody) and ask the mailman/woman how he/she is and then organize a parade with my friends, celebrating some made-up occasion.

expectancy violations theory is an excellent theory.
I have a suggestion that will not get you into too much trouble. Violate someones personal space by standing too close to them (proxemics) or stare at them after you have made eye contact, look at someone in an elevator. that should work.

When you converse with others in your regular setting, instead of speaking, sing.
