I am just curious as to what others think? I believe that being able to follow directions, pay attention for reasonable time periods, cooperating with others, and a problem solving attitude are the most important things we can encourage in our children rather than teaching them abc's and 123's before they go to school. What do you think?

They should definitely know how to follow directions, get along well with others, and respect authority figures. If we as teachers did not have to spend so much of our day correcting students and teaching them how to behave, we could focus a lot more of our time teaching them abc's & 123's. A lot of parents these days do not spend enough time at home teaching their children proper behavior and respect. Parents should teach these things at home and teachers reinforce them at school as a support to the parents. We should not have to spend as much time teaching them about social behavior as the abc's &123's. School is a great place to put their social skills into practice, not to begin learning them once they get there.

From a K teacher's perspective, I will tell you this...

We don't expect 5 years old to be able to sit still for very long or have many problem solving skills. These are things that children learn as they get older, and we as teachers teach them.

But, we would like parents to enforce following directions at home. It is unbelievable how many students are not taught to listen to their parents or adults at home. I think those who do have the easiest time learning in school.

I agree with you that citizenship can be as important as ABCs in Kindergarten or pre-school.

:)

I think the most important thing for a child to know is to know that their not alone. When they walk in that school building know that they have a mother or a father, a sister, or a brother at home who loves them dearly that's waiting for them when they leave from school. Also know that people are going to talk about you but just remember that life goes on and they will achieve all their goals with them talking about them or without them talking about them(they probably just haters anyways.. so let them hate)!

I can agree with you, but the schools today seem to want a pre-educated child, to move through the grades, so that they do not have to take on the responsibility of teaching them anything.

Cursive isn't as lots of a existence ability because it became into even 20-30 years in the past; now that maximum verbal substitute is digital, keyboarding and computer skills are extra considerable. besides the undeniable fact that, that's nevertheless considerable to study - it enables a student to jot down immediately and legibly, and it enables them to be waiting to study cursive letters and notes. while they analyze time-honored source records for history, lots of what they study would be in cursive. while they get carry of a letter from Grandma or great Aunt Maude, it is going to additionally be in cursive. What i've got performed is to require my 6th grader to study and grow to be proficient in cursive; that's certainly one of his objectives for this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. After he gains mastery of it, i'm going to enable him come to a determination no rely if he desires to apply it always or not. I certainly have not used it for something yet my signature via fact the seventh grade (while instructors stopped requiring it), yet i will nevertheless study it extremely actual and use it as quickly as I would desire to. merely my ideas!
