They say to use distilled water in a battery because city water contains chlorine and well water contains several minerals and rust. Putting these in your battery may cause the cell to go bad or even leak. To check the level you have to remove the cap off the top of the battery. Depending on the type of battery you have this may have one or more to remove. Becareful when removing not to get only of the acid water on you, or your cloths. Use a flashlight to look into each of the open holes to check the level. They should be filled up to the bottom of the hole. Of you have any that are low; add till you reach this level. Then replace the cap or caps.

When battery water is low, the anode and catode battery plates in insuffient submerged. We have to top it up.
The best is to add pure (de-ionized) water. It is less available compared to distilled water. Adding ions (minerals) into battery would combine with battery water (sulfuric acid) to become a sulfate salt. Tap water have metal from rusting pipe. Non-RO bottle water would have some dissolved minerals.
*My mechanic however advice that the best is to replace the battery water from another battery.
Usually there is a high low marker at the side of battery.

There are a lot of minerals in tap water that will end up between the lead plates in the battery and cause it to short out rendering your battery useless. If it's a car I care about, I prefer to use Optima batteries. If you keep your charging system in good shape, it will last 9 or 10 years.

You remove the caps and look inside to check level of electrolyte. Fill to the bottom of each hole..not to the top. Distilled water is all you use, never tap water. The minerals in tap water will react with the acid and lead in your battery, causing the plates to sulfate at an accelerated rate. In other words, it wont last as long if you do. It wont affect your car, till it wont start......
Die-hard is currently the worst, Motorcraft is next worse....I've had good luck with Interstate batteries.

it will reduce the efficiency of your battery because it will cause a salt build up, or the water just wont disolve the lead sulfate salts efficiently

If your battery is old enough to have removable cell caps, you need to replace it.
Pretty much all batteries are the same. Take your pick.
