What is the method? Both my daughter and I learned to read phonetically. My education degree is outdated. My grandson is learning some other way and having difficulty in the first grade. It is not because his parents don't care or don't work with him. They are doing a lot and it is not helping.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I taught elementary school only two years and got married. I have not used my degree very much since. I was an art volunteer for two years in my children's schools. I am bad out of touch with the current methods of reading specialties.

This really depends on where you are located. A lot of schools are still using phonics as the basis to the reading program. However, the big buzz word seems to be balanced literacy. This is a balance between phonics and whole language. I use it in my first grade classroom with much success. We study phonics rules and have phonics related spelling lessons but we also read books and poems where we rely on good reader clues. Such as use the picture, skip the word and go back and reread. Some schools tell their teachers to just use the reading basal and don't vary from that. Even the best reading series can't do it all perfectly. I would suggest having your daughter meet with the teacher and ask to see the basal or to understand the program. Then she can supplement at home if need be.

Both grade 1 & 2 usually have phonetics as part of their English programme . This help them to identify words when reading them. Reading should be a fun time to instill the love of reading in the children and the teacher may point out or even ask the kids if they notice some of the phonetic sounds they have been learning. You can find many audios or even videos at some books stores which you can hear/see with your child. There are so many resources on the internet too.

The new catch of teaching is that your children learns the language through the skills that should be derived from the language. You talked about reading. It is also a skill the students learn. The teacher cares how much your children comprehend in a particular situation.
To update your knowledge of teaching methodologies you can see a number of publications on the topics and use them in a proper way in order to educate even your grandchildren. Then you will not have to worry about all these.

It really varies from school to school depending on what curriculum they use. Some more detail on the method your grandson's school is using would help. Are they a Balanced Literacy school using guided reading groups? Four Blocks? Basal with textbooks? Success For All?

I teach remedial reading to hearing impaired kids and still revert to phonics. Hooked on Phonics wouldn't be making any money if it didn't work.
English is based on sounds related to symbols. There are phonics rules and tons of exceptions. a) have the kid read out loud nightly b) pick up phonics books from teacher stores and grocery stores..it isn't going to hurt what ever means the school is using. Our first graders have homework..ask the teacher for ideas.

If your grandson likes computers, try using this great site, suggested by a reading teacher at my school. I se it a lot in mymedia center and the kids love it - even those who read well.

It's possible to spend a lot of time and money trying to find ways to show your kids how to see and improve their studying skills. Is hard to instruct a small kid how to learn, and even engaging them to learn is a challenge in itself. Nonetheless it does not need to be this way as you got the aid of this system https://tr.im/1r84J , Children Learning Reading program.
With Children Learning Reading you will teach your youngster how to separate looks and separate phrases in to phonemes, an essential issue as soon as your child is merely learning how to spell.
The reading program from Children Learning Reading program makes it easy for children to read quickly and effectively, from easy words to phrases till they learn to learn stories.
