Misinformation about marijuana is rampant. The governerment has sewn most of this misinformation. Starting with a guy named Harry Anslinger who came out of the old temperance movement.

The fact is marijuana is the least harmful of all the drugs, including alcohol and cigarettes. In fact, some studies have shown that the chemicals in marijuana can protect your brain cells against things like alzheimers.

The hypocracy of our goverment is easy to spot. They claim we live in a free country and yet they tell you what you can and can't put in your own body. Why is alcohol legal and weed not???

Let's compare alcohol and weed:
alcohol makes people violent.
weed makes people peaceful.

When people drink alcohol and drive they loose control of their cars. When people smoke weed they drive slow and their senses are hyperactive and therefore aware of their surroundings. I bet you will have a very hard time finding any stories of someone (just on weed) killing someone else with a car.

If you keep drinking alcohol you can get alcohol posioning and die.
There is no way to overdose on weed. Even if you tried you would fall asleep long before you were in danger.

I would suggest you rent and watch a movie called "Grass". It shows how the governerment has lied repeatedly about marijuana.

The answer really lies in the aggressiveness of the lawmakers in your jurisdiction with respect to the subject matter it would like to include via penal legislation. This is because crimes declaring the illegality of dangerous drugs are generally malum prohibita, which means that the State has determined, through a set of factors, that the act while inherently not really wrong has deleterious effects on society and should thus be proscribed via passage of criminal laws for the purpose.

In some jurisdictions, alcohol drinking and marijuana use is both illegal because the legislature deems both to be serious health hazards according to the standards they employ. On the other hand, the legislatures of some jurisdictions believe that alcohol use is not as dangerous as using marijuana, thus only passing criminal laws for the latter.

Malum prohibita is simply a matter of what policies a State prioritizes. Though not inherently evil, each society has its own set of standards which aids the lawmakers of each jurisdiction in determining what acts would be better off declared as against public order and/or public policy.

"No punishment could be too severe for those [prisoners] who were kingpins of the drug trade and who ruined so many lives. But, by far, the majority of these prisoners are guilty of only minor offenses, such as possessing small amounts of marijuana. That excludes people who used it only for medicinal purposes." Walter Cronkite

marijuana is illegal because the government cannot make as much money off it if it's legalized. If it were legal, they would only get part of what its worth in sales tax, but since it's illegal, if they find it in your house or car or other property, not only do they take the marijuana, but they can take your other property too and then make money off the fines you pay for having it, or from the time you send in jail...and yes, jails/prisons get paid according to the number of inmates they house...this is also why reformation is shunned in preference of repeat offenders.

It's more valuable to our government and law enforcement personnel at all levels as a black market commodity than it would be as a commercial one. Think about it, cops, DEA, prison guards would all lose their jobs and, more importantly, kickbacks from the dealers. Also, having lots of people in jail or prison has a suppressing effect on the larger society. Suggested reading: "Ain't nobodies business if you do. The absurdity of consensual crimes in a free society.". It's a book. I forget the author's name at the moment.

Yes, but an attempt to ban alcohol was already made with horrible results. Maybe we should look at individual responsiblity with these issues.

When you drink, no one around you is FORCED to become drunk with you. Smoking is addictive, but it does not cause you to become intoxicatingly high.

Marijuana on the other hand, gets people around you high, whether they want to be or not.
