Just curious-
Therianthropy is not very well known, so here's a definition-

Therianthropes or therians are people who believe that they have the soul of an animal or believe that they were meant to be born as an animal instead of a human.
Reincarnation often has something to do with these beliefs, but not always.
"Real" therians would not believe in werewolves or shifting.

Does this sound possible, like something of their imagination, or just a personal belief for these people?

Yes they can transform.
Some belong to therianthropic disabled genes.
Some just wish they were their favorite animal.
Others can transform.
Hey the elephant man was real and he mutated at night, why can't this be harnessed in shape-shifting?
Because it is.
Did you know there has been a werewolf and werecat???
They are freaks of nature.
But what a brilliant survival tool!

Personal belief. And as such is completely impervious to rational arguments and objective facts.

No, this doesn't sound believable. It's one of the laws of nature like begets life but it would be cool though.
