4-5 hours of homework per night is definitely too much--that leaves you barely enough time to eat, wash, etc. If your homework is taking this long, ask your parents either to provide or hire help--you may need extra tutoring to make the homework go easier (I know, I know, that sounds like more work, but if you learn how to study more efficiently, you'll eventually get faster). Or, if you're getting an unreasonable amount (i.e., a true 4-5 hours), then your parents should speak to your teachers/school.
But if you mean 4-5 per week, then suck it up. That's light. And 10 pages over break is tiny, even in 8th grade.
Oh, and yes, half of homework is pointless, in and of itself. But the act of having to work on something, despite it being unpleasant, is good training for the future (when you'll probably spend 40-60 hours a week doing stuff you don't want to do, including work, house work, paying bills, etc.).

Are you joking? What school do YOU go to? That's completely insane.
All that homework just burns you out... it's supposed to enforce learning, not ruin your life. I'm a sophomore in the top of my class in all honors classes, and I don't get that much.
In any case, here's the most effective way to alleviate homework stress: if they give you long-term assignments, lasting a week or more, do yourself a favor by getting them finished on weekends! Don't make your weekday load even worse!
But you've probably already learned to do that.

Sorry - I agree with those who have no sympathy. The purpose of schooling is education, and that is a process that goes on - should go on - every day.
If you put your focus and energy and concentration on the schoolwork, you will find you get it done faster, you retain more of what you read and write - and overall, you might even start to enjoy it.
If you keep focusing on the negative - oh it's too hard, oh it's too much, oh I'm so stressed - it will get harder and harder.
Don't focus on yourself - focus on the work.

It's alright. Your not alone. I'm only in 7th and my English and History teacher give me stupid crossword puzzles and word searches. They don't even have anything to do with what we are "learning" Right now, we have to write 2 research reports - one in English and one in Science. I'm against all of the pointless homework too.

Do you have a time during school to start your homework? Is it taking your peers just as long to do their homework? Ask your guidance counseler what they think of the level of work and ask if they believe it's appropriate. If it is taking so long to do maybe you just need help to do it quicker. Don't worry.. Just wait for summer when there is no homework

but theres nothing you can do about it, except just not do you r homework. But that would lead to bad grades and a poor understanding of the subject matter, which will make it hard to get into college.
Go do your homework!
I hate it too, im a sophomore in highschool and i have WAY TOO MUCH!!

It depends. Is this HW busy work given to you by a nagging fata**, or is it actually relevant to what you are learning? However, find extra times during school to get it out of the way, like after you are done with an activity.=)
Trust me, I have personal experience.
