My dorm doesn't allow, pets, but over the summer I really want to get a pet rat, I've been reading up all the info on the net about them. I've known other kids who keep, hamster and lizards. They rarely do random dorm searches. I'm in campus housing, buy not the major campus rooms, more like the upperclassmen dorms. I mean if they keep tons of Liqour and beer.
What's wrong with me keeping one little rat? Am I wrong?

Well if you get caught you get in trouble. I say it is, but then again they probably won't find out. How much trouble could you POSSIBLY get in for one little rat? If you really want it I say go for it.

Yes, it's irresponsible.
First of all, you need TWO rats. Rats NEED the company of their own kind -- one rat will be lonely and bored. No matter how much time you spend with your rat, you can't communicate or groom him the way another rat can.
Secondly, rats need BIG cages. It would be hard to hide a big enough cage. Plus many rats love to run on a wheel...at night. This might bother you and your roommates. And where would you keep the supplies? Food, bedding, cleaning supplies? Can you AFFORD all those things?
But most importantly, rats do get sick and need to be taken to a vet. Can you afford a vet? Can you get the rat in and out of the dorm when going to a vet? Can you even GET to a vet?
I know it's hard to be patient, but for the sake of the animals, please wait until your situation is better suited to keeping pets. In the meantime, maybe you can do some volunteer work at a shelter? That's what I did when I was in college and missed having pets!
Good luck.

Yeah, it's wrong. There are reasons for the rules - some people are allergic to animals, animals get loose, some people don't take proper care of them which leads to smells, not all residents like animals and so on. They can't make an exception for you even if you do everything right. It sets a precedent they don't want (since the next person will want a rat or hamster or a guinea pig or whatever). And if you get caught, your rat will need a new home. Better to wait until you can move into housing where you can have pets.

Have you ever heard of a therapy pet? Dorms have allowed students to have cats or other pets for theraputic reasons. Studies have shown that simply petting a cat or interacting with animals have lowered stress levels, blood pressure, help with depression, etc. See if there's a way you can get around that rule with atherapy pet??

Yup, it's against the rules, it's sneaky and you risk getting into trouble.. You really want to get into trouble for a rat??? If you keep a rat, when you aren't supposed to, you are actually lying... You should be a good student, do your studies and when you are done school, and have your own place, and it's not against the rules, get whatever pet you want..
