The name is French and many French men were voyageurs. They were employed by Fur companies and the Lewis and Clark expeditions. Many of them were expert boatman which was a very handy skill to have for their particular travels. Many had been trappers themselves and were either married into various Indian tribes or at least spoke several of the dialects.

they were travelers and traders. mostly they traded furs between the french canadians and people living along the shores of the great lakes, mostly native americans.
