There are two types

1. Granite-Forms on the continents deep underground
It cools slowly and is Coarse grained so the crystals are large enough to see by eye.

2. Basalt - Forms at the surface, principally in the ocean basins, but also in isolated "hot spots" on the continents.
Fine grained - crystals only seen under high power microscope

Basalt is the most common type of igneous rock

I should say, BASALT. It is the most common type of rock in the Earth's crust and it makes up most of the ocean floor.

It is definitely either granite (continental) or basalt (oceanic), sorry I can't narrow it down more.

Depends where you are. Most places it would be basalt. My favorite though, is obsidian.
