Depending on your current health and body shape you should start to see a difference in three to four weeks if you swim for 30 minutes (non stop ot total, not including the time you spend standing at the end of the land adjusting your goggles and not including breaks you take because you get tired, I'm talking total SWIM time, even if it's in increments) three times a week. Mind you it may be relatively small difference at first but the more you swim and the harder you workout the more of a difference you will see. Your metabolism will go up, you will be hungrier, your body will start to gain tone as you use your muscles more and you will start to feel more energized.

Don't worry about how far you swim at first. Once you start to see a difference and feel a difference in your body, start paying attention to your laps and try to add a few more in the same amount of time (speed it up) or add a few more minutes AND a few more laps to your routine.

If you feel like you are up to it, have a swimmer, lifeguard or coach evaluate your stroke for efficiency. you will gain speed and distance if you are swimming as efficiently as possible. however, the fact that you're getting in and working out is the most important factor to start with.

Good luck!!!

distance really doesn't matter, its all about time, maybe u should try to swim at least 4 or 5 days a week for maybe 1 or 2 hours, that will give u a difference! and eat healthy too!

it depends on your current fitness and your goals. A basic set id about 15-20 100's (4 laps) leave about 10 sec rest after each one ( i do them on 1:35)
