i dont know much about cars but if it should be there and it's not u probably wont be on the road long

The muffler is used mainly to reduce emissions from your car because it is bad for the environment and to reduce the sound of the gas that is coming out....hence the name "muffler". You can drive your car as long as it goes, without a muffler, but you might get pulled over and issued a "fix-it" ticket.

The chief risk is getting pulled over by Officer Friendly, and being made to undergo a vehicle inspection which could prove to be a lot more expensive than just fixing one muffler.

until u get pulled over or your car gets impounded. o yea, the muffler has nothing to do with "emissions" besides sound. the catalytic coverter reduces "emissions" my car is pre 75' and i have a striaght pipe exhaust, and my car is fine, im just killing the world =)
