FWD - Front Wheel Drive
AWD - All Wheel Drive.

Kind of self explanitory there. But here goes. Front wheel drive vehicles, the engine only powers the front wheels. Gives better traction in wet and slick conditions due to there's more weight on the drive wheels due to the engine being positioned directly above the drive wheels.

All wheel drive (Subaru for example) has torque sensors on the wheels that sense a difference in torque and can send power to the rear axle if there is wheel slippage up front. This type of system is OK for highway use, but completely useless for severe offroad situations as AWD doesn't offer low range gearing.
