Like a lot of cultures, they think it's just plain nuts! We are really hung up on the cleanliness thing in our country, and I don't think that's necessarily bad, but where circumcision is concerned, even the American Academy of Pediatrics stopped recommending it years ago. Yet we cling to it as a culture and do it anyway. For us, it winds up being a personal decision made by the parents. But in other cultures, it' not even a consideration, unless they are living here and trying to assimilate into our culture. I see that a lot, and I try to encourage them to be true to their culture and do what feels right for them.

Many cultures do not practice it. I've been with more men in my life who were not circumcized than who are. In fact, I got so used to uncircumcized that circumcized ones started to look wrong to me. I am still debating as to whether or not I will circumcise my baby if it is a boy. I'm leaning towards no, but my mother is just horrified when I mention it. She says its too hard to keep clean and it will get infected. Honestly, how did the human species survive the past hundred thousand years?

Not necessary. It's a religious thing for Jewish people and cultural for Americans, but these days only about 60% of boys are in America, so that's changing. Most of the rest of the world does not practice it.

a lot of people see it as mean and torturous. they dont see the point in it. they think that with proper cleaning, circumcision is unnecessary.

Because it's barbaric and cruel and medically unnessecary. We are one of the few countries that think we have to cut the foreskin off our son's lil member.

It's a personal thing that the parents decide.

i think the question would better have been worded "why do people cicumcise their newborns"

I think its only Americans that do it - Aussies dont.
