In a similar situation myself. My kids have the iPod shuffles (1GB) and it works well for them. They haven't filled it yet, they frequently change their library, and they can take it with them to just about any place (primarily on their walk to/from school...they can't use them in school though but don't want to leave them in a locker). My wife would like one as a graduation present (getting her RN degree soon) and I'm torn between the 30GB and 80GB model for her. Depending where she gets a job sort of influences the decision. If she ends up working at one of the bigger hospitals in the area she'll be taking the subway into the city and would appreciate the 80 GB video model. If she is a bit more local, the 30 GB would be fine as it would pretty much only need to have music on it. I guess if you intend to watch a lot of videos or have a large music library, go with the 80 GB model. 30 GB for music only is a pretty good amount of space unless you have a huge library. The Nano's are a pretty good option if you intend to be fairly active with them and don't want to carry around the larger models.

** Edit **
Just picked up the 30GB model from Sam's Club for $238 (USD). The 80GB model was available for $338 (USD) and I forget the price for the Nano's.

I would get the 30 gb because a 2 gb will cost you 150, for 50 more you can get twice the memory and for 50 more you can get nearly ten times the memory, the 30 also plays movies and downloadable ipod games
