Carbon is the element on which life is based. Its ability to catenate (form bonds with itself) is the central theme of Organic Chemistry (which got its name from the fact that it was thought that only living systems were capable of making this compounds). In a nutshell, without this ability, we would not be here. Carbon can react in an infinite number of ways to make compounds as simple as methane (natural gas) to a complex molecule like DNA (which has carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, to name a few elements). Pure carbon exist as amorphous carbon (coal), in this form is dangerous, if you inhale it in huge quantities, you get black lungs (coal miners die from this disease), another form is diamond, very valuable. Graphite is another form of pure carbon. Buckminsterfullerene is the newest form of carbon, it looks like a soccer ball and it is very important in nanotechnology nowadays. Check Wikipedia or other internet based encyclopedia for more information.
