Being on the school board of most communities is a respected position and in my area one that you elect via vote. They aren't paid, only the School Superintendent is and in many smaller communities they aren't paid either. It is mainly a civic duty that people run for in order to make the school system better. It doesn't work all the time as some use the position to jump to more important political careers, and ones that pay a whole lot.
