ZenWoman: Prince Phillip is not a commoner.

Originally a Prince of Greece and Denmark, Prince Philip abandoned these titles shortly before his marriage. At the time of his engagement he was known as Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. In 1947, he married Princess Elizabeth, the heiress to King George VI. Prince Philip was a member of the Greek and Danish Royal House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Prior to his marriage, George VI created him Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich with the style of His Royal Highness. In 1957, Philip was created a Prince of the United Kingdom. Prince Philip took the anglicized name of his mother's family, Mountbatten (formerly Battenberg) after becoming a British citizen.

Because that's not the way it works with royalty.

She must always be proper and part of that is referring to her husband as Prince Phillip.

I am sure at dinner parties with friends she simply calls him "Phillip" or "my husband".

You see, she(the Queen)is Elizabeth Windsor. He is Prince Phillip. Yes, he's her husband. But the "Royal" lone falls to her. He just married her. It's tricky, but it's important.

Jennifer Lopez didn't even call her husband "my husband" on American Idol. She referred to him as "Marc Anthony." It's a way to show respect for the person as an individual with their own name, title and position... as opposed to labeling them as belonging to you like a subject. This is even more true for the Queen of England than it is for an actress/music sensation.

It depends on the occasion whether The queen refers to Prince Philip as Prince Philip or The Duke of Edinburgh or my husband.
She will usually only use my husband when mentioning herself in the same sentence as in my husband and I.

Etiquette.
He always refers to her as The Queen & never my wife or Liz.
When they are at the White House etc. they are working & these are their work titles just as you would refer to a soldier by his rank even if he was closely related to you.

As she is in the more powerful position, it would be considered rude to Prince Phillip to refer to him as "my husband." It's just as belittling as when some executive refers to his wife simply as "his wife", as if she has not identity of her own.
