yes you will hurt the system. you need to recover the R12 1st then there are seals you need to change over. you also need to put a special lubricant in the system and then refill with r134. If you go to your local auto parts store they sell kits to do the change over to R134.

I work for an HVAC company... yes it will you cant mix them at all. You need to have someone reclaim the r-12 and put the r134 in it... however all systems can not accept the other refrigerant once r-12 has been added. Call your HVAC company and ask them to help you since they should know what your system is.

Yes they are not compatible and you just screw up the R134. have the r12 evacuated, and refill with r134. If the system is really old put a new dryer or condenser on the system. and it will last longer.

After recovery of R-12, add 8 0zs of p.a.g. oil get retro kit from auto store and about 4 cans of 134-A, Seeing R-12 systems use more fron to fill you will find you will need less w/134-R. Engine off load 134-R into system till it will not take any more, Start eng. put a/c on high n fill till low side is at around 30 - 35 p.s.i, on low side and 250 p.s..i.s on high side, "humidity may variy readings" I have done this manny of times in past saving friends hundredes of $ dollars.

Yes, the oil is different in both types of refrigerant. It won't work. You will need to have a system changeover to R-134a. Another alternative is to use a direct replacement for R-12, such as "Hotshot". Ask any Hvac tech about getting some.

I mixed R134 and R12 together in a Jeep Grand Cherokee about 10 years ago.It worked fine and to this day it still does.I personally believe we have been told it won't work or something will break but in my experience there was no problem.

These are two completely separate systems, and they don't mix. It's like asking if you can listen to a FM station on your AM radio. Any shop can convert your system to R134 though.

YES! Take it to a shop that does A/C work. There are certain things that have to be done to convert an R-12 system to R-134A. The two cannot be mixed. Please do not try this at home. A/C work should be left to the professionals.
