I would go to google.com and read the section they have in place for people that tells about the process regarding page ranking at google. Thats kind of why they put it there.

It is incorrect to say you have no chance, it's more accurate to say that it's an inexact science depending on many factors.
If you google the word "cat" - you'll find a variety of sites, none of which the top 10 are big corporations, like pet stores, or disney.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a real science, and i'm not an expert, but i can tell from working in the IT field that it just takes some research, and lots of tweaking.
Best of luck.

The fast way to do this is to get an account with Google Adwords. http://adwords.google.com/
You can bid on keywords if you have the highest bid your ad will appear at the top of the list of ads. This is the only way to say for certain that you will get the top spot. Incidentally, having your add get clicked on a lot will also help your natural listings with that keyword.
SEO is a crap-shoot. It may work, it may make your stats worse. It all depends on who does the SEO optimization and what strategies they use. Google does not disclose exactly how the determine ranking, but most people agree that the number of reputable sites that link to yours (not out of yours) is a big factor.

I know that you can submit your URL to your website to Google, but I don't think there is really anyway to get it first in the list. If someone searches for something retaining to something about your site, it might appear first depending on how it loads, or just if a lot of people have recently clicked the link to it and your site from Google is a big "HIT!" But, I'm not exactly sure.

You need to get as many links pointing to you website with the word Pets as the title of the link. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), which this is, is a long and usually expensive process.
Alternatively open a Google Adwords account at www.google.co.uk/adwords and you can pay to have your ad at the top of the page.

That's what everyone would like to know, mate.
(Actually, there's a neat trick, which is frowned upon a bit, and that is to find an empty space on your website and place a load of keywords there, but in white coloured font (or font colour matching the background) so that it's invisible to the human eye, but can be seen by the search bots.)

Key factors:
- Have good quality content that is interesting to users of your site
- Have links to your site from other quality, relevant sites.
The first can to some point dictate the second - word gets round about your site and people start to link to it on forums, their own sites, etc.
For your information - here is the blog of Google's SEO expert - http://www.mattcutts.com/blog

With clever websigners, it can happen, one of our web master did it for a demo for a client, and after 3-4 months, managed to push them onto page1/2 on MSN/Google, but it cost them a fortune.
In your case, I would say save your time unless you have a deep pocket..or lots of time, th the word 'pets' on a search engine is like flees on a dog, millions of them, waiting for auto-push will take you years, if not forever.

Here is how i understand it. This is where google makes thier money. It's a sort of auction. you pay to be moved up in line. like 5 cents a hit or 10cents a hit, its really up to you. then the higher the price you are willing to pay the higher up you are. but to be first for pets... man that would cost you a pretty penny. you'd have to "out bid" the pets marts and petcos of the world.

Companies pay many 1000's to get that priveledge. There is no way you are going to get ahead of them. (Unless you are sleeping with a relative of senior Google management)
