Is it because they cracked black backs w/ a whip in slave days? What does it mean to be a cracker?

I was just wondering that the other day. Thanks for asking, it made me do a little research to find out WHY! I see the whip crack answers , and several sites on the internet claim that but withno real corroboration. The most interesting site had much to back up its claim that "Cracker" was the general term for all white people originating in Appalachia and spreading throughout the south referring to the mainly scotch irish moonshiners, or "Corn Crackers" who inhabited those parts. One very popular song that seems to corroborate this thinking was the old "Jimy Crack Corn and I dont care" which is the song of a slave about his master, who fell while drunk from making the moonshine, cracked his head open, died and the slave says "I DON'T CARE! MAsters gone away!"

You know that one out of all of them was the only one that seems to have any corroboration to it historically. The rest (whip crackers and soda crackers make sense but have no historical facts to back them up.

It is from the sound a whip makes (when used by a slave master), Crackers refer to white people in positions of authority - police, government officials, teachers, your boss. Over time, however, it has come to be used as a mildly offensive word for any white people.

Interesting question.

Cracker usually refers to a hick or hillbilly because they resist or reject assimilation. It is sort of a redneck.

Also, in Florida, cattle herders used whips to herd wild cattle. You could hear the crack of the whip, so they were called crackers.

Another reason is during slavery the slaveholders used whip cords, and thus the slaves called them crackers.

Hope this helps.

You are correct with the origin of the word, however a cracker is a racist term for a white person.

I could list several racial terms for black people and white people, however, I don't really think you should learn them......

Very funny! Back in the day you had that power, but now where is all that power? What did that power get you? Not a thing. You are the ones that are sitting there scared to cross the street. Scared that youre going to get your behind kicked by one of us.

I would like to know to. What is sad that a lot of black people talk about how raciest white people are. When you listen to the way that you talk to us. It sounds like a lot of black people are raicist as to white people.
