If the parent provides the first phone, I think it should be the kid's responsibility to buy whatever upgrade they so desire as it will teach them how to prioritize their expenses and having responsibility of their choice.

I think a kid should be 14 before they buy their parents a nice good phone. The parents provide a home, food, transportation, the least a kid could do is work hard enough to earn their own money to buy their parents a phone. That way they call call home every few minutes to let them know where they are AND what they are doing!

What makes you think parents are suppose to BUY their kids phones? They are not toys. I can see you having one for safety reasons, but I get the feeling that's not what you are looking for. Your parents don't owe you a phone. They are a privilege not a right.

It depends on how responsible the child is and how "GOOD" they are! I do not think any child should waste their childhood with video games and text messaging! A child should have a phone to keep in touch with home if they are other places beside school and home!
