You have to find the LCM (Least Common Multiple) so that you can add and subtract. say 1/2 + 1/4 you would change 1/2 into 2/4 and add it to 1/4 getting 3/4 for the answer.

Look into your textbook for samples on how it is done. As you can see 2/4 is another way of saying 1/2 just like 4/8 or 8/16. You can see all the fractions I showed you will reduce to 1/2.

If a whole number is involved then 1-1/4 1=4/4 then you would state it as 4/4-1/4=3/4

I hope this helps. If you need more informtion just ask.

To add or subtract fractions:

1. the denominators must be the same
2. If they are the same then follow the indicated operation
3. If not, you must find a least common denominator and once you have found it , follow the indicated operation.

Example:

2/3 +1/2=
1. you find 6 as the LCD
2. follow the operation
2/3=4/6
1/2=3/6
----------------
7/6=1 1/6

To add them like this one 2/4 + 2/8 = 6/8 How many times does 4 go into 8? 2 times right so you'll switch 4 to 8! Then multiply 2x the number of times you took 4 to get to 8! Add 4/8 + 2/8= 6/8!

To subtract, for example 6/7- 5/14= 7/12! How many times does 7 go into 14? It should be 2! Multiply the top number by 2 and you should get 12! Then take 12/14 - 5/14= 7/14! And since 7 can go into 14 you don't change the top number! It was hard for me to learn them! Good Luck!!!!

to add fractions you basicly add across for example 3/4+2/4 you take the 3 and the 2 and you add them together so thats 5 then you take the 4 and just leave it 4 so your answer is 5/4 or 1 and 1/4 and subtracting is basicly the same

What the other person said.
Make sure they have the same denominator.

Example : 1 / 3 + 2 / 6 = ?
Multiply 1 / 3's numerator and denominator by 2 so the final denominator is 6.
Then it'd be 2 / 6 + 2 / 6 = 4 / 6.
