Why C-shaped magnets are often made with conical poles, even as useful volume inside the slit is dimished?

The conical poles bring the magnetic lines of force coming off the the magnet closer together and therefor the field between the poles is greater than it would be if the size of the magnet body were continued right up to the poles. Smaller size - stronger field.
