I have done a lot of "permanent substitute teaching" where I go in and take over a class that the original teacher couldn't finish (I've done this 3 times for a total of 1 1/2 school years).
The biggest distractions for me were students talking while I was trying to teach or while others were trying to work, and people asking irrelevant questions during my teaching.
Hope you're not asking so that you can make these distractions in class tomorrow (wink, wink).

For me, the biggest distraction is the limitation of the students mind. As a music teacher, I'm very passionate about all types of music, Rock, rap, jazz, blues, classical...etc. When students decide that all classical is bad, I find it very difficult to be able to show how it relates to today's rock. They just don't want to hear about it and decide to ignore what I say.
Most of my students only like music from the last 5 years. 5/1000 = 0.5% of the last 1000 years of music is quite small, and of the 0.5% they only like either rock, or country, or jazz, etc. Minds need to expand, but it's hard if they are already closed.

I would say if you have a well planned class to keep the kids busy and learning you won't have as many distractions, where the kids are concerned. Sure they will stray off task, but if you can keep them interested...they won't give you much problem.
My pet peeve is when the secretary blares on the overhead, announcements that can wait for the end of the day.

I can deal with students distractions better than I can deal with adult distractions, such as parents walking in your class unannounced during the middle of your lesson or co workers or administrators coming in your classroom unannounced.

i am ateacher in a private school for 5yrs. the biggest distraction in my class was those students who lack attention. they also wanted to get your attention even if that means disturbing you in your lesson. another form of distraction is those swtudents who wanted to go to the toilet every minute.
