Both! Alcoholism tends to run in families but it doesn't always. Many times it happens if a person starts drinking at too young of an age. That is a known fact that has been substantiated. There are other reasons, also. Just because a family member is an alcoholic is no excuse to become one. You just need to be more alert to being careful to avoid the downfall. My first husband was an alcohol, as well as my mother's only brother. It is a sad disease. My uncle was such a handsome man. He now has cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease and is in very poor health. He also looks many years older than his age, even though he was finally able to quit drinking after many times being put into the Veteran's Hospital to get "dried out". My 1st husband was a violently mean drunk/alcoholic! When I was younger, in my 20's, 30's and very early 40's, I drank when out with my spouses and often I wouldn't remember the trip home with them. One day, I realized that I could get into trouble even though I NEVER, EVER DRANK alcohol at home. But when we did go out, I didn't seem to know enough when to stop at a sensible point. I no longer drink alcohol, at all. There are alcoholics that have no others in their families that are also alcoholics, therefore it happens for many reasons, not just because it sometimes has a tendency to run in families. If you stay away from alcohol, you don't ever have to worry about it. If you do drink and realize you are wanting it too much, you need to seek help. Another sign of needing help, is if your family says anything about you possibly drinking too much or if your job is interfering with your drinking or your drinking is interfering with your job. :o)

Alcohol & drug addiction IS a disease that has a genetic disposition to it. It is not a genetic disease per se.

i'm somewhat uncertain of using the word "ailment" yet i don't think of its so basic as a sure or no determination. that's starts off out as a call then turns into an habit, which won't be in a position to be controlled. sure, you're making the determination to do something yet you have not have been given administration over no rely in case you grow to be addicted. human beings don't comprehend that an addict won't be in a position to easily merely awaken & say "ok. i'm not likely to shoot up in the present day or ever returned". that's previous accepted reasoning that anybody who's thinking outdoors of the placement can comprehend. that's the comparable with maximum unfavourable circumstances. somebody can actual tell a individual who's being abused that they'd desire to stroll away & think of they are stupid for not doing so. yet except somebody has been in that project they don't comprehend the carry it has over you. I grew up in a house with addicts. I in no way as quickly as believed that it became right into a *determination* for the guy I enjoyed to be hurting me. I knew it became into previous their administration. I knew in the event that they'd cease merely as actual as asserting "no" they might have.

genetics can make it easier to become addicted, but you won't become an alcoholic if you don't drink.
