Why do men hit women?

and why do women think it is all right for them to beat them up?

You'll find that many men come from families where their parents were physically abusive to each other, and their children. Chances are that those men's grandparents were also physically abusive to their children. In many cases this abusive behavior goes in cycles, from one generation to the next. A man will imitate his fathers behavior, sometimes out of impulse, sometimes out of habit. No spouses should be abusive to each other in front of their children because this sort of behavior stays in a child's mind, on through adulthood, and eventually, that behavior will manifest itself on their spouse, or children. In some cases, women are abusive to men. So I believe it depends what sort of family a man comes from, will determine his abusive behavior. Regardless this is no excuse. Men should "NOT" hit women.

Men hit women because of one reason and only one they are insecure they think that one day their wife or girlfriend will see the that it is time for them to leave and will do just that, leave. Now people do things for different reasons but the fact that a man would lay a hand on a women is totally out of line. I think violence going on in the world today is from people that just don't have any self respect or morals. But when a man does this to a women, men that do this think that the women has no other option (as they think) and will tolerate it but they don't. Women that are lucky enough to leave such a relationship realize that they are way than a no good worthless piece of trash they are intelligent women. Men that hits their wife around has no remorse. But not all women get up and leave. They stay and say to themselves "well maybe he is right I 'am what he calls me I'm the worthless piece of trash that he calls me", but the women that leave and find strength inside to "say you know what? I'm better than that." But no matter how many Oprah shows say these things that women should leave many women can't they have been put down and called dirty things and just have accepted that this is there life but they are sadly mistaken.......

Some men hit women because they are bullies and want to pick a fight with someone physically smaller or weaker. They have a hard time at work, get belittled by their boss, and take out all of their anger on their wife. Sometimes when men get drunk, they become angry at almost anything and hit a woman simply for cooking a bad meal. I've seen a lot of Lifetime movies, and there are many different types of men who hit women.

Some men hit women to feel in control. They need to assert their power to feel manly. Often they are dismissed at work, or in menial jobs, and so they feel the need to be the one in charge at home.
It is of course totally wrong!! I am just suggesting some reasons why they might do it.
As for the women some have been abused as children and feel almost like they "deserve" it, some feel trapped and are threatened if they leave, and still others feel like if they leave no one else will have them.
These men often cut them off from friends and family and the women feel like there is no where to go. If there are kids involved they also might feel that they are in danger if the women do not "co-operate".

I think men that hit women are actually threatened by women and feel the need to control them . I think those kind of men resent what a woman can do to them, the way they make them feel......I think it is anger at the power that the feminine sex have and a man that feels powerless, or doubts his masculinity feels more like a real man when he hits or degrades a woman. A lot of men also have mommy issues....

women use their smart azz mouths and push buttons and men use what they know and that is physical force. They also seem to get misguided in life to think this behavior is okay.

FYI- I don't condone a woman hitting on a man either just because she knows he won't hit her back.

Because it makes him feel like a big man, but too stupid to realize it makes him a big coward. Maybe he wants to impress his peers. "I hit a lady - that makes ME tough!" Also, because they know women are smaller and weaker. While they may be brave enough to hit a woman, they're too scared to hit someone bigger and stronger for obvious reasons.

men shouldn't hit women....EVER. but at the same time, i think women know this, and they shouldn't take advantage of it by hitting a man (because they think he won't hit her back). we are all human beings and to be honest, no one should hit each other period.

choice simple choice simply put .The research does not support a broad brush painting of generational behavior. As there are families with no abuse and abuse arises out of anger ,reaction versus responding.
