make sure that a. you have a networking adapter/ network card and b. make sure your hp is able to handle wireless.

Check your wireless card is on, there will be a tiny slide switch or button, and a wireless light should be on. Use the card's wireless utility to find your network, set the encryption and connect.

You probably already tried this, but go to Network Connections in the Control Panel and make sure that the WIFI is turned on.
