You want a crossover cable. A patch cable the pins on one end match the pins on the other, like =, for a crossover cable is X for some pair, hold the ends next to each other you should be able to see the coloured wires are they in the same order??

Use a crossover only when connect 2 PCs together without anyother network equip eg a hub or router.

If you are just connecting two devices you need a crossover cable. Or you need to add a hub or switch between the two.

If you are using a regular cable then you are connecting the transmitter in one system to the transmitter in the other, and the receiver in one to the receiver in the other.

A crossover cable will connect Tx to Rx and Rx to Tx.

Edit:

If your laptop has WiFi, then for a few $$ you can get a wireless router that will have a switch and allow your laptop to connect wirelessly. If you have cable or ADSL internet it will allow direct connection from either system to the internet and will provide a firewall and security from attacks

If I understand this properly you pick a crossover cable and attempt to apply a parallel cable. you could tell in spite of if that's parallel because of the fact the comparable colorings will seem on the comparable pins of the two RJ45s. For the machines to artwork the communicate and hear line contraptions might desire to be crossed over so machine1 is talking the place device 2 is listening and vice versa. in case you're crimping your individual cables only opposite the pin/shade order on one end.

Listen now-what you need is a crossover cable(it's when you want to connect only two computers). If you've taken some other kind of cable you won't have a network.I recently did what you want to do-i connected my desktop to my laptop with such cable(you don't need a hub,a router or anything else). When i connected them i had the same message-that the cable was unplugged-there had to be some ip's changed and it worked.Good luck..
