I am in the process of choosing one of these careers, and had a few questions. How many hrs per week and how often you get called in for work during off hrs, are they much different between the two? When time comes around for a family, i'm just concerned with how much time my job can take away from them. thanks a bunch for anyone who can help me out! =)

The hours are almost the same. It's just that the ophthalmologist spends some of them in surgery in addtion to all the stuff that an optometrist does.
The training for ophthalmology is much more rigorous because you must go through medical school after college before doing your ophthalmology residency.
The hours are typically from 8 to 5 Mon- Fri and sometimes Saturday mornings.
There are not a lot of emegency calls unless you live in an area where you are the only eye doctor.

Hmmm. This isnt quite an strange crisis. It can occur to anybody and that's why plenty of colleges dont seem simply at your total gpa. They seem at your sci middle as good as final forty five hrs. So there is also a hazard in case you rlly buckle down you'll have a hazard. With that mentioned, if u dont get right into a college the primary time u practice, u can constantly take a look at once more subsequent year after strengthening your software with extra task shadowing, retaking a couple of categories, and many others.

My optomotrist sets his own hours and the ones at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and the like have fairly 9-5ish hours according to the notices I've seen.

If you don't want your work to interfere with your family life than only work part time. You'd not make as much money but you'd be with your family. You could always work out of your home and be there constantly.

I would choose Optometry if time is an issue.....You will make good money and have good hours....Now, if you choose Opthalmology, You will be called after hours....(not too much) you will make GREAT money. But the school is not as long for Optomitrist. and you will start making money now.
