I was looking at a portrait of a couple recently and it had the man seated and the woman standing behind him putting her arm on his shoulder. This to me did not make sense and seemed very backward. I believe that the woman should be seated and the man stands behind her with his hand on her shoulder. This symbolizes (and submliminally sends a message) to people that the man is over his wife and he is in charge (as it should be). It also symbolizes love in that he is willing to stand up so his woman can sit down. I don't think it is wrong for a man to sit in a portrait as long as the chair is a higher than that of the woman's seat. For example, it would be fine to take a portrait if he is sitting down in a chair and she is on the floor with her children in her lap. Do you all agree?

you could look at that picture in several different ways, you chose to take the negative point of view. It takes a solid strong woman in this day of age to keep the marriage bonds strong and set a example for the children, of love-honor and faith. With him sitting in the chair, it could very well be a show of respect of him, and yes she is the back bone that keeps the family strong and steady, that he sits, and all the love is surrounded around him, to keep him centered on what's he working for. They are a "TEAM" that strives together jointly.

Absolutely! And usually the male should be taller so it usually isn't an issue. When I did photography I always made the male the center of the picture unless there were objections as it is natural. I also dislike the picture where the man is laying on the floor and the kids on top of him. It tells alot about the family dnamic.

Of course sir!
Men should always be above women because it shows that they are the dominant gender.
I agree that letting the woman sit can symbolize love but more importantly the portrait should show that the man has complete control over his wife and that he is the leader of his household.

Agree 100%, as the man, he should be on the top, just like a classic picture. A picture perfect to me.

OK you are retarded if you honestly believe this outdated crap.

It's all about the composition of the photograph, and it is up to the photographer how to properly portray that composition.

I guess if you don't like this explanation, then you should look at it as the man is the center of her attention, which is probably what the photographer had in mind. It probably looked out-of-balance for him to be looming over her.

Get a life.
