Those old guidelines really mostly apply to others who are giving you gifts. Don't give him either, if he won't appreciate either (and really -- what man wants china OR cotton?)
Get him something he will like and/or use -- I'm fairly certain most men aren't aware of the "gift guide" that says what gift goes with what year.

I think the "gift type" for anniversary years are more for the wife. The first thing I think about with cotton is a shirt and china is plates. Get him something that comes from your heart. Whether is be tickets to baseball, a concert, a round of golf, fishing/hunting equipment or anything else he is into. As long as it comes from your heart, you'll be fine. Plus how many guys actually know what "gift type" is assigned for each year?

Buy a new 100% Cotton dress shirt in his size and meet him at the door wearing nothing but that.

you definitely don't have to stick to the wedding anniversary cliches. Get him something you know he would love, even if that is a video game or a some DVD's

What is china ? If I was you I would take him to a MLB game or something like that, that will keep him around for a long time ! It would also give him something to brag to his friends about !

Its only your second anniversary get something for that is really for him. When you reach your 5th then get something for the two of you like a dog.

If you want to please your man and put a smile on his face than forget about what tradition says. Think about what your husband is interested in and buy him something he will use. He will be very suprised and appreciative.
