The US does not have a policy of torture, despite the fact that it would save lives. THe various comments like "waterboarding" were all taken out of context, and are not US policy.

Torture has been practiced by individuals such as in Abu Grab, but they were acting in violation of US policy.

The problem with "Torture" is that everyone has a different definition. Some actions that may be intended to obtain information may be classified by some as torture but not by others. What may be "torture" to some people is what others do for fun. In the extreme the act of imprisonment itself is viewed by some as "torture". There is no way any modern country can survive without crossing the threshold of someone's definition of "torture". By common definition though the US does not practice torture. The countless denials by the US government will not convince those that want to change our countries leaders though.

On the other hand our opponents in the war on terror practice torture that would fit the definition of the word by anyone.

Policy accepted by whom? And the US government does many things that I DO NOT condone, torture included.

I like that its acceptance is dependent on certain criteria. It's OK if: it saves your kid's life. Its OK if it stops even one 9-11, its OK if it's not done on US soil, It's OK if the torturer is saving lives by his actions. It's OK if the tortured one is not a US citizen, It's OK if the US government contracts non-us agents to do the torture. Its' OK if it results in breaking up terrorist cells,,,,,,,,,

Its ok if it sacrifices America's moral high ground that everyone in the world looked up to and respected us for.

it somewhat is a relatively asinine fact. tremendously via fact you maximum in all possibility comprehend that Christians (or the different faith for that rely) have self assurance that ethical codes are in place as a instruction manual to assist us develop into one with God - sin being something that separates us from God. it somewhat is a non secular question, yet you could have religious human beings physique of suggestions the question with their incorrect human minds fairly than their spirit. Your suggestions will by no potential bypass away your physique. it is going to rot on your head once you die, and each little thing you concept will rot with it. Your spirit is the only part of you that has any desire of ever getting into touch with God. God is religious, no longer actual. you need to be fairly empty. You deny the main necessary part of your self - your soul. Do you even pay attention your judgment of right and incorrect anymore? Or did you kill that too?

People like it because when you torture someone you get out of them what you want. People like to dehumanize others and feel their pain is worthless, or at least less important than the cause of "peace". Ironic, eh?

I don't like it for many reasons, mostly because what you get out of them is usually further from the truth and closer to what the "powers that be" want to hear. It's simply inneffective, not to mention cruel.

Sorry, too complex for 10 words or less, this is as short as I can get it.

To gather information, bad since the one being tortured willsay anything for the pain to stop. If you do it as retribution, then the victim is best left alive to be released as a warning to other, "This is what you get for messing with us"

Imagine if we took all the slimebag terrorists in Gitmo, tell them they are being released, then we cut off both feet and hands, 1 eye and 1 ear. Not only are they no longer a threat to us, but others will decide to stay home and behave.

It is a tool. Sometimes you use a claw hammer, sometimes you use a sledge hammer. Sometimes you ask nicely, sometimes you torture. The right tool for the right job.
